Recently Time magazine had an article about “Christian sex”. I found this intriguing because I did not realize there was Christian and non-Christian sex, I thought sex was sex. This article was about the recent church movement to get married couples having more sex- healthier sex- and they were doing some interesting things to promote this movement. One church even published a calendar each month with different- how do I phrase this- “activities” for couples. Personally, I find this really sad- should the church really have to push people to have healthy sex lives? Isn’t this a normal part of our human nature?
But maybe it’s something deeper. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the church often teaches sex as being bad. Then you get married and discover sex is wonderful- but you have been so conditioned to believe sex is bad, that it makes you mentally unbalanced about the whole thing. Or, maybe the church did not teach to prioritize sex in marriage. In my marriage therapy training, I learned that the way to determine a couple’s happiness was to find out how many times a week they had sex, because our happiness and contentment with each other directly impacts our sexual activity with our spouse. Or maybe we have all neglected the obvious and endless connections between sexuality and spirituality. Sexuality really is all about spirituality.
Read Song of Solomon. It teaches us several things. God created sex. Sex is good- really good. There is a proper relationship for sex. Sex is connected to God. Sex is about love. Sex gets us in touch with our spouse, our selves, and our creator. We are sexual beings. And again, sex is good- really good.
So this week. “may you honor the way that God created you. May you have a profound sense of respect for the fact that you are a deeply spiritual, sexual, and mysterious being, and that love it ultimately a profoundly spiritual thing.” (Rob Bell). May we all realize sex is good and whatever stage we are in- single, engaged or married, – learn to channel our sexual energy the proper and right direction.
I don’t see what the big fuss is about? It all sounds legitimate to me…
I think the problem is that some people have forgotten what sex is and what its for. ‘They’ need to re-experience what its all about.
Let me just say….AMEN !!!
